Achieving Optimal Health for Men

Millions of men are experiencing undiagnosed and untreated andropause

Forty million men are going through andropause. Yet until recently men complaining about symptoms of andropause have been largely ignored. Many physicians are fearful of treating testosterone deficiency due to unscientific beliefs that it may cause cancer, or because of regulatory fears or concerns fueled by highly publicized news of professional athletes abusing steroids. Others believe that decline is just a normal part of aging. Quietly men have suffered.

At the same time, research is steadily demonstrating the myriad benefits of testosterone replacement in men. Without adequate testosterone, a man may experience:

  • Low or nonexistent sex drive
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Depression
  • Diminished sense of well-being
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Decrease in muscle mass, with an increase in body fat
  • Changes in cholesterol levels
  • Decrease in hemoglobin and possibly mild anemia
  • Fragile bones (osteoporosis or osteopenia)
  • Decrease in body hair
  • Changes in cholesterol levels and lipid levels
  • Breast tissue growth

Low levels of hormones may lead to additional serious conditions

Scientists have recently turned their attention to the link between testosterone levels and Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Moffat et al. studied data on 574 men participating in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study for a mean of 19.1 years and found that free testosterone concentrations were lower in men who developed AD.

Men are also at a high risk for osteoporosis, but because they have greater bone density than women, men typically don't develop osteoporosis until their mid-seventies. Unfortunately, the first symptom that a man usually has for osteoporosis is a broken hip. No health campaigns alert men that their bones are at risk, and health insurance companies often deny bone densitometry testing to men.
